Discourse Communities

There are several discourse communities that I am involved with. Several span across many different forms of media, with a few examples being social media, movies and television. I have been a part of these communities for a very varied amount of time, with some being for a long time and some being very recent. These communities have given me the ability to discuss and debate different topics across different fandoms and cultures. I feel that these communities have given me a greater sense of debate and argument by debating the different ideas that some people have about certain topics.

One discourse community that I am involved with, is the NBA fandom on Twitter. This community is very volatile of specific opinions of players and specific teams. A lot of people participate in this community, which varies from small time fans of basketball to people who have followed basketball for as long as

they can possibly remember. This community values the different ideas of people and the insight of experts in the sport, like the different analysts for the networks. The community communicates over Twitter, whether it’s under posts or a standalone post about a topic. The newcomers typically learn the language by assigning the words to the different players.

Another discourse community I am involved in is the community behind Counter Strike. The game is a 5v5 tactical shooter game. The community has a lot of people who believe a lot of different things in the way of in game cosmetics, the economy behind those cosmetics, the way the developer updates the game, the different ways of gameplay and the professional

esports scene behind it. The people who participate in the community are people who have played or currently play the game. They participate in the community because they want their voice to be fully heard about the game that they play a lot. A lot of the people in this community have spent several hundred to thousand hours playing the game.

The last discourse community that I will talk about in the blog that I am involved in is the community of Metal Gear and Metal Gear Solid. This discourse community discusses a lot about how the story of the games are actually told, and the mystery of the story. The community that follows this franchise is very dedicated to the games and its creator, Hideo Kojima. The people that participate in this community are people who find the story of the Metal Gear franchise interesting, and people who have played the games and can tell the story from experience. The community communicates via social media and official areas of the games from the publisher. They use these communication systems because they are easily accessible and allow for many people to communicate their points together. The newcomers of the community can typically learn the language after consuming some beginner focused content about the entries in the franchise. It typically does not take very long to learn about the content inside the community.
